Heavy power chords, deep bass lines, and a great use of the drums to break up verses with the chorus. It isn't a thrashy song, and it is slow paced, but its lovely. I don't know why exactly, but this song was great. There's a slight rhythmic change about one third into the song, which is like a very long bridge, then changes back right towards the end. I'm not sure why, but a lot of the songs on this album, there are 2 or 3 words in a song where James holds the note. James' vocals are probably one of the best on this album. It's riffs are nice and quite clean, and it is what gives this song a great sound. The ending is a simple, sharp ending - the perfect way to end a song in my opinion. The guitar riffs are simple, the drums are simple, the bass is simple, but it is the simplicity which goes so well with this song. James has great vocals here, but his only let down is when he sings and holds the wooooah it's electric - It sounds like his voice is about to break and he is straining to let out his breath. The solo's are long, and they seem to mix in with the distortion quite too well. It's a short song with a set of lyrics which is looped through the song - "Free Speech, Free Speech, For the Dumb / Free Speech, Free Speech, For the Dumb / Free Speech, Free Speech, For the Dumb / Free F***ing Speech" The recording quality sounds a little choppy, but i think that was intentional. (I am not liable if you actually take my advice to kill somebody for a copy). I hope you enjoy this review, and if you dont have this CD, I recommend you buy it, or kill somebody for a copy. It is mostly a cover album - mainly from bands which have influenced Metallica over the years - (Mercyful Fate is a good example). It was the one album of the time which swung back into the old Metallica era, which was something I liked. Garage Inc in my opinion is currently the best album released by the band. Staying true to the loose and fun vibe, the latter features guests Gary Rossington (Skynyrd), Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney (Alice In Chains), John Popper (Blues Traveler), Les Claypool (Primus), Jim Martin (ex-Faith No More) and Pepper Keenan (Down, Corrosion Of Conformity) sharing vocal duties.Review Summary: Garage Inc - Possibly one of Metallica's greatest albums - the greatest easily in the past 10 years. All, however, are delivered with a strong Metallica vibe and James Hetfield’s distinct snarl. The raucous “Free Speech For The Dumb” (by UK crust punks Discharge) sets the tone, followed by “It’s Electric” from NWOBHM legends Diamond Head, to whom Metallica quite possibly owe their career for inspiring them to get started in the first place.įollowing up with an homage to the godfathers of metal, Black Sabbath, “Sabbra Cadabra,” and with the bulk of Disc One’s material representing their more familiar influences – “Die, Die My Darling” (Misfits), the titular “Mercyful Fate,” “The More I See” (Discharge again) – it’s reassuringly apparent that the band Metallica had grown into wasn’t a million miles from the teenagers who first got together in 1981.īut it’s Bob Seger’s country-rock paean to touring life, “Turn The Page,” Nick Cave’s “Loverman,” Blue Öyster Cult’s “Astronomy,” Thin Lizzy’s “Whiskey In The Jar” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Tuesday’s Gone” that perhaps gives some perspective to the band’s frame of mind for Load and Reload. The result was a double-album of new covers, along with a clutch of hard-to-come-by B-sides and EP tracks, with Disc One representing the band Metallica had become, and Disc Two getting to the heart of the group. There was just a renewed interest in f_king with some other stuff.” Just shake that off a little bit and come back to something a little looser and a little kind of sillier. But we just did the two Load albums more or less back to back, so it just seemed like a good time to do some, from both a time point of view and a creative point of view. As Lars Ulrich explained to Metal Hammer, “We haven’t really f_ked with cover songs for a while. “There was an interest in f_king with some other stuff”
